Artificial Intelligence (AI)

The simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, especially computer systems.

How it works

AI encompasses a spectrum of techniques — from hand-coded rule systems and search algorithms to modern deep learning. Contemporary AI systems learn from data: they adjust millions or billions of numerical parameters to minimise prediction errors on training examples, developing internal representations that generalise to new inputs. Inference then applies those learned parameters to new problems without further training.

Why it matters

AI is the defining technology of the current era, reshaping every industry from healthcare to finance to creative arts. It automates cognitively demanding tasks previously exclusive to humans, dramatically reduces the cost of intelligence, and enables entirely new product categories — from conversational assistants to autonomous vehicles. Understanding its fundamentals is essential for anyone making decisions in a technology-driven world.
