Moonshot AI
A Beijing-based AI company (月之暗面) that builds the Kimi assistant and open-weight models such as Kimi K2 / K2.6.
How it works
Moonshot AI develops large MoE language models trained with custom techniques including the Muon optimiser (for better training efficiency), QK-Clip (for long-context training stability), and Ring Attention (for distributing long sequences across devices). Their Kimi assistant is deployed commercially in China with strong long-context and agentic capabilities. Open-weight releases of Kimi K2 have made their architecture and weights available for research and deployment.
Why it matters
Moonshot AI is part of a wave of Chinese AI labs producing frontier models that compete with US counterparts in capability. Their Kimi K2 demonstrated world-class agentic performance on SWE-bench and other coding benchmarks. Their open technical approach — releasing weights and publishing implementation details — contributes to the global research community. Together with DeepSeek and Baidu, they represent a significant shift in where frontier AI research and development is happening.
